Graphic/Packaging Design

Role: This individual project was two-fold: create a poster and an invitation for a screening of an imaginary film. The plot of the film was a concept that I wrote after just receiving the name of the film, Scorchy.

Timeline: Aug. - Dec. 2017

Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator

Film Synopsis

Ignored by his drunken, sleazy parents, Felix grows up alone in the crime-ridden city of Rotherham in a rodent-infested complex above the local and notorious gay bar, Scorchy. Despite his lack of companionship, Felix grows up listening in fascination and awe, through the thin walls of his room, to Scorchy’s famous drag performer, LaRue. Inspired by the excitement and beauty of drag culture, Felix seeks out a future for himself in the shoes of his idol LaRue. This film focuses on his grueling and exhilarating journey of becoming London’s most reputable drag queen, "Scorchy."

Visual Inspiration

I was immediately attracted to the burnt orange hue when searching for pieces of inspiration. I browsed through broadway film posters that had minimal color palettes and searched for graphic artists who were creating simple vector illustrations.

Logo Development

Logo Finalization

After settling on the typeface, I made the decision to subtract the fill and gave the logo a black stroke to match the vector illustrations I would eventually create. I then added the crown to symbolize the "drag queen," which would serve as the film's primary icon.

Color Scheme

  • Kept with main color being burnt orange

  • Citrus Palette to complement warm hues

Vectors & Patterns

  • Created graphic vectors using Illustrator

Poster Design

Used all my elements to create posters and narrowed down to 3 different compositions (from left to right)

  1. Broadway/Musical

  2. Animation

  3. Romantic Comedy

Wrote a handful of tag-lines to integrate into the posters...

  • "Just Drag Me To Hell"

  • "Life Is Too Short Not To Be A Drag"

  • "Let's Hope This Movie Isn't A Drag"

  • "You Just Got Scorched!"

  • "The Most Fab, Bad, and Drag Bitch!"

  • "If She's Going Down, Then She'll Drag You Down With Her"

Finalization and Mockup

Eventually landed on the poster that had the most graphic and simplified treatment.

Film Invitation - Movie Screening

The Prompt: After finalizing the movie poster, I moved onto designing an invitation for a formal film screening of Scorchy. My intention was to use all the elements I had previously made for the poster and integrate them into the invitation, which I wanted to be interactive.

Stage 1 : Blueprint

The first step was to begin composing the blueprint of the invitation. I wanted every fold to be methodical and reveal new information each time the viewer opened the layers. The invitation needed to include an RSVP slip for the viewer to send back.

Printed & Constructed

Eventually printed the invitation on glossy cardstock paper

  • Used the vectors that I previously made for my poster, but chose not to include, were now present on the invitation

  • Created patterns from those vectors for the front and back of the invitation

  • Invitation revealed taglines and new graphical elements to tease the audience with each fold
