THE LOOMING TOWER
Role (Graphic Design Intern): I was asked to assist the creative department at MXM with delivering teasers that were to be presented on Hulu's Twitter and Instagram pages promoting their new show called The Looming Tower.
Team: Zachry Horn, Chloe Kim, Lilly Grigorian, Tess Kessler, Jean Pyjar

Timeline: May - Jun. 2018

Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator
Plot
The Looming Tower is an American drama web television miniseries, based on the book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, that premiered on February 28, 2018, on Hulu. The show traces the "rising threat of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA during that time may have inadvertently set the path for the tragedy of 9/11..."

Assets
Hulu provided our team with the typeface (Graphik), the specific set of quotes to be used from the show and from the fans, and all the raw JPGs shot from the professional photographers on set throughout the show.

Fan Quotes

Hulu picked out certain quotes from fans of the show that they wanted us to include in our deliverables for the Fan Assets.
"Not all stories...have those interesting characters that are dealing with demons within themselves."
- Dan Futterman (Actor)
"The man who was supposed to get Bin Laden didn't get him; Bin Laden got him."
- Lawrence Wright (Director)
"If you don't have a Hulu account, this show is enough of a reason to get one."
- Fan #1
"It opened my eyes to the events in history that lead to that day and where we are in the world today."
- Fan #2

Show Quotes
Hulu then picked out certain quotes from the actors/actresses and directors/producers of the show that they wanted us to include in our deliverables for their Points of Intrigue posts.
Challenges
Working within the Parameters of a Client!
This project was my introduction to working with a large client who came with their own set of creative constraints.

1. My team was not allowed to alter any stylistic features such as typeface or edit the raw images.
2. Hulu asked us to have all the text in the quotes lie within a box similar to Tetris; all the text needed to line up or it was GAME OVER for me!
ROUND 1
UNAPPROVED
Round 1
-
Client did not approve of the similarity amongst three lines in the middle
-
Wanted us to explore emphasizing different words/phrases
Round 2
-
Client wanted to revert back to R1 in which "World Today" was emphasized
-
Determined there was an imbalance; too bottom heavy
ROUND 2
UNAPPROVED
ROUND 3
APPROVED
Round 3
-
Better sense of balance from top to bottom
-
Client approved the emphasized words
Fan Assets Deliverables

1X1 and 16X9 Deliverables

Hulu asked that we deliver two sizes of deliverables for the Fan Assets. The first being the 1X1, which meant they were going to be compatible for Instagram.

The second set was the 16X9 deliverables which needed to be compatible for Facebook banners and Twitter posts.

Conclusion
This project was such a gratifying experience for me to dive head first into clientele based work. I learned how to design creative pieces within certain visual constraints under the guidance of incredibly talented designers. I was thankful to practice manifesting patience when going through multiple rounds back and forth with the client and to always triple check my work prior to handoff.
